The NWFA Certified Sales Professional Class held at Goodwin Company last week was well received by all. Even 40-year veterans such as Gary Smith of Custom Hardwood and myself garnered new knowledge and tips. Instructor Roy Reichow, National Wood Floor Consultants, was personable and engaging while sharing a great deal of expertise.
Roy drew wide eyes when he showed the class his “Stop Light” flyer explaining the relationship of relative humidity and flooring moisture content. Jeffrey Forbes, Goodwin’s Marketing Coordinator said to me, “We need to save that flyer.” The class was appreciative of the information. I sympathized as I, too, felt the same after taking my first wood floor inspector class 15 years ago. Once you know everything that can go wrong when sales staff and installers are not informed and properly trained, it’s only natural to have a certain level of fear.
Roy restored a lot of confidence, however, when presenting his detailed Pre-Sale Checklist. In addition to the 180 technical slides from the National Wood Floor Association Class, Roy taught us how to document in-depth information about client preferences and site conditions to reduce the chance of a problem.
Goodwin Company is known for our precision milling and good fit. Roy complimented us on the design of our reclaimed engineered floor construction and how it avoids delamination in dry climates by placing the tongue and groove below the dark layer of the plywood that runs lengthwise. The lighter colored grain runs across the floor instead of down the length so can peel more easily.
Thanks Roy. You are a very helpful and entertaining instructor. I think I speak for everyone when I say we certainly enjoyed your class!
The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) Sales Advisor Certification class is happening right now at Goodwin. Wow! The pre-sale checklist and Roy Reichow’s (National Wood Floor Consultants, Inc.) phone app that lets the installer calculate any expected anticipated shrink/swell so that problems can be avoided up front is worth the whole course. Thank you for sharing this, Roy!
Goodwin was excited to present, “Architectural and Design Uses of Reclaimed Wood” to 62 architects at MiaGreen. We answered lots of questions about installation, moisture control and sustainable forestry. The story behind sinker cypress and the process of recovering logs always engages the audience. A good time was had by all!
While in South Florida, we visited a number of friends to show off Goodwin’s new factory finished reclaimed wood, including Moor, Baker & Associates Architects, P.A. and Bonded Floors in Vero Beach (who we’ve worked with for over 20 years).
We also stopped by Uline’s vacation home in Everglades City to see their Goodwin engineered floor. As we made our way up the coast, we made a stop at Architect’s Unlimited in Naples and at Chico’s Headquarters in Ft Myers. Chico’s founders, Marvin and Helene Gralnick put a Goodwin Heart Pine floor in their home 25 years ago. The Gralnick’s wanted to use Goodwin’s Wild Black Cherry flooring in their new stores; however, solid unfinished wood proved too challenging for commercial contractors.
Today our factory finished engineered floor in any custom color is ‘install ready’ for high-end commercial or residential projects. Thank you Marvin and Helene. We were honored to provide you with your River-Recovered ® Antique Heart Pine floor!
Groundbreaking Commemorates New Facility Designed to Diversify Offerings and Create Jobs
(Micanopy, FL) – Goodwin Company, pioneers of River-Recovered® heart pine and cypress, proudly announce the groundbreaking of their new facility. The expansion is part of a partnership with Heritage Wood Finishing Company and will bring new jobs to the region.
“Goodwin Company has experienced steady growth and success here in Alachua County,” said Carol Goodwin, President of Goodwin Company. “We look forward to contributing to years of future success in this region.”
Goodwin Company is active in the effort to spur growth opportunities for the region’s manufacturing industry as a whole. The company has been a steady presence on the Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce’s Advanced Manufacturing Council, which has been instrumental in regional efforts to develop a manufacturing talent pipeline and advance policy decisions that support industry growth.
“We are elated to celebrate the growth of Goodwin Company and the job opportunities it will bring to the region,” said Susan Davenport, President/CEO of the Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce. “We look forward to supporting the future success of manufacturing companies like Goodwin Company here in Alachua County.”
Goodwin Company was the first reclaimed wood manufacturer to produce engineered flooring in the United States (at the time, all other domestic companies were importing it from overseas). Today, consumer demand for pre-finished and custom color floors continues to grow. As a result, Goodwin has partnered with Heritage Wood Finish Company to develop proprietary, custom finishes specifically formulated for resinous River-Recovered® wood. The new facility will enable Goodwin to offer a variety of finish and color options, while providing acclimatized storage for engineered and factory finished stock.
“Our customers spoke and we have responded,” said Goodwin. “‘Install Ready’ flooring is in high demand. However, pre-finishing River-Recovered® wood is a challenge because of its resinous nature. Our proprietary, specially formulated coatings – one of which is second in hardness only to diamonds – allows us to satisfy the needs of customers who do not want to finish their floor on site. So, whether someone would like a clear pre-finished floor, or a custom color, we are now able to deliver!”
According to Goodwin, the Florida Small Business Development Center at the University of North Florida (FSBDC at UNF) played an integral role in the expansion.
“We’ve been working with Goodwin Company over the course of several years to help identify new market opportunities,” explains Dr. Phillip Geist, MBA, CBCP, CGBP, Area Director for the FSBDC at UNF. “We conducted a financial analysis and developed strategic and business plans designed to diversify Goodwin’s offerings to meet customer demand. This, in turn, will create new jobs and further contribute to the economic vitality of the region.”
Goodwin is partnering with the Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce to conduct the official groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, December 9 at 10 a.m. at the Goodwin Company facility located at 106 SW 109th Place, Micanopy, FL 32667. Media is invited and encouraged to attend. For more information, please visit http://heartpine.com/rsvp/.
