Groundbreaking Commemorates New Facility Designed to Diversify Offerings and Create Jobs
(Micanopy, FL) – Goodwin Company, pioneers of River-Recovered® heart pine and cypress, proudly announce the groundbreaking of their new facility. The expansion is part of a partnership with Heritage Wood Finishing Company and will bring new jobs to the region.
“Goodwin Company has experienced steady growth and success here in Alachua County,” said Carol Goodwin, President of Goodwin Company. “We look forward to contributing to years of future success in this region.”
Goodwin Company is active in the effort to spur growth opportunities for the region’s manufacturing industry as a whole. The company has been a steady presence on the Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce’s Advanced Manufacturing Council, which has been instrumental in regional efforts to develop a manufacturing talent pipeline and advance policy decisions that support industry growth.
“We are elated to celebrate the growth of Goodwin Company and the job opportunities it will bring to the region,” said Susan Davenport, President/CEO of the Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce. “We look forward to supporting the future success of manufacturing companies like Goodwin Company here in Alachua County.”
Goodwin Company was the first reclaimed wood manufacturer to produce engineered flooring in the United States (at the time, all other domestic companies were importing it from overseas). Today, consumer demand for pre-finished and custom color floors continues to grow. As a result, Goodwin has partnered with Heritage Wood Finish Company to develop proprietary, custom finishes specifically formulated for resinous River-Recovered® wood. The new facility will enable Goodwin to offer a variety of finish and color options, while providing acclimatized storage for engineered and factory finished stock.
“Our customers spoke and we have responded,” said Goodwin. “‘Install Ready’ flooring is in high demand. However, pre-finishing River-Recovered® wood is a challenge because of its resinous nature. Our proprietary, specially formulated coatings – one of which is second in hardness only to diamonds – allows us to satisfy the needs of customers who do not want to finish their floor on site. So, whether someone would like a clear pre-finished floor, or a custom color, we are now able to deliver!”
According to Goodwin, the Florida Small Business Development Center at the University of North Florida (FSBDC at UNF) played an integral role in the expansion.
“We’ve been working with Goodwin Company over the course of several years to help identify new market opportunities,” explains Dr. Phillip Geist, MBA, CBCP, CGBP, Area Director for the FSBDC at UNF. “We conducted a financial analysis and developed strategic and business plans designed to diversify Goodwin’s offerings to meet customer demand. This, in turn, will create new jobs and further contribute to the economic vitality of the region.”
Goodwin is partnering with the Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce to conduct the official groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, December 9 at 10 a.m. at the Goodwin Company facility located at 106 SW 109th Place, Micanopy, FL 32667. Media is invited and encouraged to attend. For more information, please visit http://heartpine.com/rsvp/.

Reclaimed wood floor manufacturing requires custom manufacturing treatments. As part of our Community Support we will host 25 local high school students who study science technology, engineering and math this coming Thursday, 10/01/2015, from 11 to 12:30pm, for a tour and lunch at the sawmill. We will show the students how we process 1,000 year old river recovered heart cypress and pine logs… read more.
To provide our clients with some of the richest, most beautiful reclaimed wood in the world we go to extra lengths to conserve this rare wood. Logs recovered from Florida river bottoms require extensive processing not required in handling freshly cut timber. We must power wash the sand off the river recovered logs from centuries of being on the river bottoms, remove nails left from yesterday’s carpenters in the massive industrial revolution era warehouse beams, saw, kiln dry, mill and grade at every step to long term established standards.
Join us in celebrating Manufacturing Month at Goodwin. You will enjoy bar-b-Q chicken, baked beans, cole slaw and all the fixins’ including our famous Oatmeal Cowboy Cookies. Call for the recipe if you can’t make it.
We love seeing old wood in beach homes. Mysterious 1,000-year-old heart cypress with rich tans and browns popped with UV Oil elegantly and gracefully bring the feel of the sand and ocean atmosphere into your beach home, office or retail establishment. So, as you can imagine, we are very excited to be presenting at SGA Architects in Pawley’s Island, South Carolina this Thursday, September 17th. SGA specifies a lot of cypress paneling in their beautiful coastal home designs.
Afterwards, Jeffrey Forbes, Goodwin’s Marketing Coordinator, and I have the privilege of presenting a CEU class at the Carolinas American Society of Interior Designers Annual Conference on Friday, September 18th. We will be discussing how to incorporate reclaimed wood into award-winning designs. Visuals include videos of river log recovery and historic images of ‘the big cut’ in the 1800’s when clearing the southern forests became one of the main drivers for rebuilding the US economy after the Civil War.
It is always a pleasure to provide building design professionals with resources they need to specify the wood they want and incorporate the installation and finish processes to ensure their clients’ satisfaction for the long term!

Goodwin Company is sponsoring a unique contest on behalf of one of our valued clients, Peggy Gilder of Fire Island, New York (formerly of Los Angeles, CA). She is looking for a unique Parquet Ancien design for her home. She describes the beauty, feel and alluring qualities of the wood:
Pine is synonymous with the texture of relaxation. It invites the unraveling of responsibility. It takes care of itself and it ages beautifully.”
So, would you like to try your hand at Parquet Ancien design? We will select the top three custom designs and provide the winners with a panel of their creation. Our client will then select the final winner. You do not have to be a professional designer to enter.
Need more information about Parquet Ancien? Google these terms to see some neat examples: Parquet Ancien, Ancien Parquet, Parquet Ancienne, Ancienne Parquet. We’ve also included some photos of our own work below.
