Sydonie Mansion

Historic Restoration Featuring Antique River-Recovered® Heart Pine Floor Boards

A popular destination for discerning visitors, Mount Dora, Florida is one of the quaintest little gems in the south.  It is home to the historic Sydonie Mansion, built in 1904 for Pittsburgh steel magnate, James L. Laughlin. It is the only known example of the work of esteemed architect, Grosvenor Atterbury, in the entire state of Florida. Atterbury specified quarter sawn, vertical grain, 2-1/2″ “hard” pine flooring throughout the majority of the 22,000 square foot palatial estate home.

The Laughlin family eventually sold the estate to Hampden Dubose Academy.  Then, in 2014, current owners Clark & Amy Frogley set out to restore the mansion and open a museum/event venue.

The leaking roof over the porch caused the center boards leading to the front door to rot.

The Frogleys, wanting to honor Atterbury’s original specifications, turned to Goodwin for assistance.  We milled full length 16ft tongue and groove River-Recovered® heart pine floor boards to help restore the porch to its former safe and stately glory.  The Frogleys then sanded and finished the beautiful porch that had long ago been painted brown.

Gainesville’s Historic Preservation Movement

Goodwin Company would like to extend a special “thank you” to Peggy MacDonald, executive director of the Matheson History Museum.  She authored a wonderful story in this past Sunday’s Gainesville Magazine about Gainesville, Florida’s historic preservation movement.  She made note of Goodwin’s contributions of Old Florida longleaf heart pine flooring for the museum’s newly restored Library and Archives building; previously the Gainesville Gospel Tabernacle and Melting Pot Restaurant.  She also mentioned the Firestone building, which received a 2015 Honorable Mention for Adaptive Reuse from the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation (FTHP). We milled River-Recovered® and reclaimed Legacy Vertical Heart pine for that project as well.

Enjoy!

Tree Fest at Swamphead Brewery

Goodwin was proud to be a corporate sponsor of the 3rd Annual Tree Fest , a yearly event to benefit the Alachua Conservation Trust.  Tree Fest, presented by Solar Impact, was hosted by our friends over at Swamphead Brewery. We were excited to collaborate with owner Luke Kemper and marketing director Brandon Nappy on this event.

A few years back, Goodwin provided our antique wood for Swamphead Brewery’s tasting room, affectionately named, “The Wetlands”. The focal point of the room is the feature wall behind the bar which represents every wood Goodwin offers.

Swamphead

The bar top is absolutely gorgeous and was handcrafted from heart cypress and heart pine log rounds hand scribed into one another for a 3D effect.

Swamphead

The seating area is clad in Goodwin’s River-Recovered® Heart Cypress Character, while the window surrounds are a mix of naily heart pine and select heart cypress.

It was exciting for us to see just how much Swamphead Brewery has grown into becoming a staple in the Gainesville community.  We were certainly honored to partner with them on Tree Fest.

Oh, and Amy Lamb of Native House Photography recently took some incredible photos of Swamphead Brewery.  Be sure to check them out:

Goodwin is Having a Blast at NWFA!

Carol Goodwin and Dan Petersen are enjoying seeing old friends and meeting new ones at the 2017 National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) Expo in Phoenix, Arizona. Carol and Dan are displaying Goodwin’s new install ready products featuring custom colors, textures and environmentally friendly finishes formulated specifically for resinous antique River-Recovered® and reclaimed wood:

  • Zero to very low volatile compounds
  • Second in hardness only to diamonds
  • Customizable to fit your specific design needs
  • Child, pet and environmentally friendly

According to Carol, builders and building design professionals have requested install ready products in the past but they were difficult to offer due to the resinous nature of antique wood.  Now, new finishes formulated specifically for Goodwin allow the company to deliver custom crafted, install ready products to their clients.

Come by and say “hi” to Dan and Carol today and tomorrow (April 13th and 14th) at the Phoenix Convention Center in Phoenix, Arizona.  They are at booth #923.  You will want to see samples of this beautiful wood.
