Heart Cypress – Perfect for Patios, Too!

We met our friend Jason Owen of Trimark Properties when we worked with them on the NIMBUS building feature wall earlier in the year. Jason recently installed a River-Recovered® Heart Cypress Character ceiling on the porch of a client’s Gainesville, Florida home. It was pre-finished with a two pass UV oil. Check out these initial photos we’ve just received:

This gorgeous River-Recovered Heart Cypress Character was sourced from bald cypress forests logged 100-200 years ago. Bald cypress (taxodium distichum) can grow to be 2000 years old.

River-Recovered Heart Cypress Character is becoming more and more popular for its unique features, which include:

Rot resistant, making it ideal for outdoor applications
95-100% heart, 100% dense growth
Blend of arching and vertical grain with some machine defects, face checks, cracks, peck and bug holes to add “character”

Heart Cypress Feature Walls and Paneling a Focal Point of University of South Florida’s Coquina Club

When the University of South Florida, St. Petersburg Campus (USFSP) sought to freshen and update some campus buildings that were designed and built in the 1970s, they turned to our good friend and architect Beverly Frank of BFrank Studio in Tampa, Florida. Ms. Frank specified Goodwin’s River-Recovered® heart cypress wood paneling for the university’s Coquina Club project.

The renovation and addition aligns with USFSP’s Strategic and Master Plan.
The final design includes a multipurpose, indoor/outdoor lounge and event space. This newly renovated student-centered area has an outdoor pool, harborside lawn and access to the Haney Landing Sailing Center.

The Coquina Club features 50/50 mix of vertical and character heart cypress paneling – absolutely GEORGOUS! Goodwin also provided a large heart cypress slab countertop. Dan Petersen of Heritage Wood Finish Company finished the countertop as well as the heart cypress feature wall and paneling (Diamond 7 interior; WOCA oil exterior).

Willis-Smith is the general contractor and Home Pride Cabinets completed the cypress installation. The exterior inset feature wall includes routed lettering by Warren Kay of Kay Enterprises.

Sinker Cypress – Antique Wood Treasures

Goodwin works with Sinker Cypress which is at least 800 years old. The large diameter logs yield heart cypress slabs that are of great width. People often ask “what is cypress wood used for?” Both the size of the slabs and the density of its grain make Heart Cypress desirable for projects such as walls, ceilings, table tops, shelves, mantles, or bar tops.

Antique wood feature walls are trending in both traditional and contemporary designs. The accompanying video features two pieces of Heart Cypress that will ultimately frame a wall of Shou Sugi Ban art (a Japanese style of wood burning.) Since the slabs will each run flush with a wall, the best edge of the slab was selected and the other was sawn.

Venture down to the foot of the intercoastal bridge in Flagler Beach and you will find a charming restaurant featuring true southern BBQ. Baynes BBQ was founded by Chef Bayne Hayes less than a year ago.

Hayes wanted the interior design of his restaurant to reflect the southern heritage behind his tasty bbq. Goodwin milled 3-1/4″ River-Recovered Heart Pine Character grade to create feature walls and a bar front. We also supplied a large River-Recovered Heart Cypress slab for liquor shelves behind the bar.

Baynes BBQ is a truly green and sustainable building project, as almost every wood feature in the restaurant can claim the title of reclaimed wood. Even the maple table tops are reclaimed wood from an old bowling alley in Gainesville, Florida.

Florida folk – next time you get a hankerin’ for some true southern fried pickles, Brunswick stew, mac’n cheese, collard greens, piles of BBQ pork, brisket, ribs, chicken & sausage and of course, homemade banana pudding, it’s well worth a trip to Baynes BBQ. This video shows Goodwin’s Naily heart pine being finished on site by our partner Heritage Wood Finish Company (HWFC). Goodwin has partnered with HWFC to develop proprietary, custom finishes specifically formulated for our resinous antique River-Recovered® and reclaimed wood. Goodwin now offers a variety of install ready products – including wide plank flooring, wood walls, wood ceilings and wood paneling – featuring custom colors, textures and environmentally friendly finishes:

Zero to very low volatile compounds
Second in hardness only to diamonds
Customizable to fit your specific design needs
Child, pet and environmentally friendly

Goodwin’s antique heart pine beams are recovered from 19^th century industrial buildings where carpenters would choose the best face of the beam to nail to. This results in our beautiful naily faced floor grade we get to enjoy now, two centuries later.

Our finisher guides the milled flooring and wood paneling material onto the finishing machine. This is the final process in the manufacturing of our finished wood flooring and paneling for wood walls and ceilings. The grade in the video features rich red tones as a result of oxidation during its life in the industrial buildings. Splashes of yellow heart can be found throughout the grade as well. The black staining around the nail holes is also a result of oxidation. This chemical reaction occurs between the extractives in the antique wood and the iron nails that were used so many years ago resulting the rustic unique character that we see today.

This historic reclaimed wood can’t help but hint to its past even in modern spaces, like the window sills featured in Gainesville, Florida’s Swamphead Brewery. As you can see, introducing antique wood walls, wood paneling or wood flooring adds a warm, natural and relaxing feel to any room in your home or office. American Institute of Architects (AIA) Convention Re-Cap

Goodwin had a wonderful time making new friends and seeing old ones at the 2017 AIA Convention in Orlando, Florida. We were pleased to exhibit alongside numerous luxury and high end manufacturers, all showing off the latest architectural products and design trends. It was refreshing to see just how popular antique wood is in contemporary design. More and more architects are specifying wood for projects outside the scope of historical renovation. In fact, reclaimed wood kitchen floors, cypress wood walls and antique wood paneling were some of the hottest 2017 contemporary design trends featured at the convention.

Goodwin Company was proud to show off our wood at the 2017 International Builders’ Show (IBS). This year, the show featured the latest in contemporary home ideas. We were excited to see just how many ways our River-Recovered® Heart Pine and River-Recovered Heart Cypress can be used to complement the numerous products showcased.

Special thank you to Hafele America. Their booth featured a beautiful Heart Cypress slab countertop. Michael Bright of Bright Woodworks in St. Petersburg, Florida crafted it using Goodwin wood. It was one of the biggest hits of the show!

Beautiful Things Happen When Lightning Strikes

Tampa Bay Lightning fans can enjoy an even more enhanced experience at the newly remodeled Lexus Lounge at the Amalie Arena. Goodwin supplied nearly 3000sf of 3-1/4″ vertical and character grade River-Recovered® Heart Cypress in an 80%/20% mix to the project. Dan Peterson, Heritage Wood Finishing Company, finished the wood with Diamond 7, a beautiful and durable finish he formulated exclusively for Goodwin.

The patterned placement of the cypress on the bar fronts, walls and ceilings is designed to be reminiscent of lightning strikes and fulgurites (“Fulgur” is Latin for lightning).

The detail and craftsmanship are stunningly beautiful. Words cannot describe the breathtaking experience of walking into the arena surrounded by beautiful and sustainable antique wood on either side.

The lounge is contemporary, modern and sleek. Its bright glow is warmed and complemented by the antique heart cypress appointments. The bald cypress is native to Florida and would have grown in great stands all around Tampa Bay; reaching 100ft. in height and 2000-3000 years old.

Chris sourced our Legacy® building reclaimed heart pine and sinker cypress for this residential remodel just last year. What do you think about these beautiful tongue and groove Legacy® building reclaimed heart pine walls?

These were handcrafted for a homeowner in Tampa, Florida. Incorporating antique wood in contemporary design is most definitely trending, especially among millennials who value both the uniqueness and sustainability of reclaimed wood.

Sinker Cypress – The Gentle Giants of the South: Part One

Goodwin’s resident history enthusiast, Jeffrey Forbes, describes the origins of River-Recovered® Heart Cypress – a.k.a. sinker cypress. Hundreds of years ago, the Suwannee River ran “clear”, more like a spring, as opposed to the murky waters we know today. Both sides of the river were literally walls of bald cypress (a.k.a. tidewater red cypress, sinker cypress). These gentle giants were more than 100 feet tall and 2000-3000 years old. Behind the wall of bald cypress you would find millions acres of longleaf pine, which Goodwin also recovers today.

Goodwin recently recovered a 35 foot long sinker cypress log that was left by loggers of yesteryear in the Withlacoochee river (which runs into the Suwannee) hundreds of years ago. Much of it has now been milled and is being used at the Bok Tower Gardens expansion project in Lake Wales, Florida. This is what sustainable design is all about. Rather than cut down forests, Goodwin recovers antique logs from river bottoms for architects and interior designers to incorporate into award-winning, sustainable designs. Homeowners love the wood because it is not only beautiful and durable, but it comes with an intriguing and rich story behind its origin.
