Antique River Recovered® Heart Cypress is original-growth Bald Cypress, logged
200 years ago and, like heart pine, was presumed lost. Commonly living to over
1,000 years if left to grow and towering over 100 feet, these were the true giants
of the southeastern swamps. Sometimes the tree produced a real specialty product--pecky
wood.
Old foresters say a fungus caused the "pecky" textured appearance
of some original-growth river-recovered® heart cypress. While the tree was
still living the wood developed narrow oval-shaped areas that look as if has been
carved out by an ancient woodworker. This wonderful grain adds interest and texture
and was a famed focal point of many Addison Meisner homes of the early 20th century.
