Congratulations to Johnston Marklee, a Los Angeles architecture firm that designed the Menil Drawing Institute in Houston, Texas. Goodwin milled roughly 7000 sf of River-Recovered® Heart Cypress siding for the project. Goodwin’s heart cypress was specified for its durable and rot resistant qualities. The Menil Drawing Institute is scheduled to open in October.

The Firestone Building in Gainesville, Florida received an “Honorable Mention for Adaptive Reuse” award from the Florida Trust in 2015. Goodwin milled the River-Recovered® and reclaimed Legacy Vertical Heartpine for this historic renovation project.

MDI was established in 2008 and the new building – designed by the esteemed Los Angeles firm Johnson Marklee Architects – is the latest addition to the Menil Collection campus. MDI was founded to recognize the crucial role “drawing” plays in the culture of modern and contemporary art. This internationally recognized institute has become a center point for numerous exhibitions, collaborations and scholarships.
Goodwin worked closely with Johnson Marklee Architects on this project. The exterior of the MDI will complement the original Menil Collection that is clad with 36,000 lf of Goodwin’s River Recovered-Heart Cypress siding. Goodwin was specified for this project because our antique heart cypress is durable and rot-resistant. The sinker cypress paneling was painted to match the original architecture of the building.

Biophilia. Literally meaning love of life—it’s a fancy word to explain people’s innate affection for the natural world.[1] This might be why we love natural light, raw materials, and turn to earthy colors for calming environments. We are desperately trying to bring the outdoors into our indoor spaces and it is evident in our design choices.
Wood uniquely provides a natural element while adding warmth. This sinker cypress slab countertop balances the tension between smooth and rough surfaces from one edge of the board to the other. The density of heart cypress wood is a result of its dense growth-rings, giving a smooth and almost soft appearance to the hard heart wood. And the rough edge brings out the rawness of the material, establishing its authenticity.
The heart pine beams relive their past in the Cirrus Logic building in Austin, Texas. Sourced from 19th century industrial buildings, Goodwin’s Legacy beams bring warmth and livability to this modern space—complete with plenty of natural light and earthy tones.
Goodwin’s River-Recovered® heart cypress gives the central accent wall an inviting and soothing aesthetic. This natural element is still at home among modern materials like metal and glass. The combination of the wood accent wall and indoor plants draw outdoors in, bringing together two worlds as the biophilia in all of us longs to do.

Antique Wood Meets Contemporary Design in Highly Anticipated On-Campus Structure
(Gainesville, FL) – Sustainable, River-Recovered® Heart Pine is the focal point of the University of Florida’s (UF) new, world-class, Otis Hawkins Center for Academic and Personal Excellence (Hawkins Center); designed to support and enhance the academic experiences of the university’s athletes. The wood – which encompasses 10,000 square feet of ceiling and wall paneling – was provided by Goodwin Company, pioneers of the River-Recovered® process. Goodwin recovers antique logs from river bottoms – where they have been perfectly preserved for hundreds of years – and mills them into arguably the most beautiful and sustainable wood flooring and paneling in the world.
According to Chip Howard, Executive Associate Athletic Director for Internal Affairs, UF sits upon what once was a vast longleaf pine forest. Longleaf is pinus palustris or “pine of the swamp.” UF Grounds Services uses many native species when planting and several of the new buildings on campus have added young longleaf pines into their landscapes. The incorporation of locally sourced antique heart pine in the Hawkins Center is a nod to the legacy and shared history between UF and that ancient longleaf forest.
“The new Hawkins Center incorporates locally sourced, antique wood into a contemporary design,” explains Howard. “We wanted to build the highest caliber, most unique and modern collegiate academic center to provide all the necessary resources for our students, so Goodwin’s River-Recovered® Heart Pine just made sense. This is not the first time Goodwin’s wood has been used on the UF campus. Last year, the company provided their River-Recovered® Vertical Heart Pine, Legacy® Heart Pine and Curly Heart Pine for use in the Dasburg House, home to UF President Kent Fuchs, Ph.D. Goodwin collaborated with an exemplary team of professionals on the Hawkins Center project, including Parrish-McCall Constructors Inc. (project builder), DR Nickelson & Co. (wood installer), Beverly Frank of Gould Evans Architects (specifier of the River-Recovered® Heart Pine) and Chip Howard and his staff.

(Gainesville, FL) – Goodwin Company, pioneers of River-Recovered® heart pine and cypress, proudly announce their contribution to the University of Florida’s (UF) new Dasburg House. The company donated a portion of their sustainably harvested and historically significant River-Recovered® Vertical Heart Pine, Legacy (building reclaimed) Vertical Heart Pine and Curly Heart Pine to appoint portions of the interior of the approximately 6000 sq. ft., on-campus residence. The Dasburg House will be home to current and future UF presidents. New UF President, Kent Fuchs, Ph.D., – a former provost at Cornell University – and wife, Linda, will be the first to reside in the new home.
“Our sustainably harvested, centuries old antique wood flooring is quite a conversation piece,” explains Carol Goodwin, President of Goodwin Company. “The logs we recover are some of the first trees cut from America’s virgin forests over 125 years ago. As these logs were floated down river to port, many of the denser ones sank to the bottom. The low oxygen environment has perfectly preserved them and, as a result, they yield the richest patina when milled.”
According to Goodwin, most of the logs for the Dasburg House were recovered from Florida’s Suwannee River. Goodwin worked closely with Gainesville architect, Apryl Ponikvar, UF interior designer, Marie Brown, and installer, Rudy Dittmar to select the perfect flooring for the president’s study, the spouses’ study, the second floor landing, the spiral stairs (treads) and the elevator.
“The natural beauty of Goodwin’s River-Recovered® and building reclaimed heart pine wood is unsurpassed,” says Ponikvar. “It brings the natural environment of North Central Florida into the home and contributes to the unique character and overall warmth of the interiors. We were pleased to find a local source that not only custom milled to our specifications, but worked alongside us from design through construction completion.”
The Dasburg House is named for John and Mary Lou Dasburg of Key Biscayne. The couple was the lead donor for the $5 million dollar project. The home opened this week.

The company meticulously sawed and precisely milled 20,000 linear feet of River-Recovered® Heart Cypress (virgin growth bald cypress; taxodium distichum) for siding and trim. The majority of the antique logs used for the project were carefully retrieved out of the Apalachicola River. The result is a magnificent, beautifully crafted complex adorned with antique wood that is not only breathtaking, but also tells an intriguing and fascinating story.

Architect Tenna Florian of the esteemed Lake/Flato Architects in San Antonio, Texas, specified the reclaimed cypress with vertical grain for the Visitor’s Center project. Lake/Flato Architects is a recognized leader in the use of sustainably sourced materials and consciously designed vernacular architecture. They were recognized as the 2004 American Institute of Architects (AIA) firm of the year.

(Gainesville, FL) – Great architecture stands forever, which is why Phoebe Cade Miles (daughter of the late Dr. James Robert Cade, inventor of Gatorade) and her husband Richard – owners of the old Firestone building in Gainesville, Florida – chose to install antique River-Recovered® and Legacy Heartpine flooring during their recent renovation. The building, which also houses University of Florida’s Gator Lab and Starter Space, features 4,000 sq. ft. of office space (two stories), a reception area, inside second floor balcony and a completely renovated and remodeled interior. The building itself was constructed using Campville Brick, another material with a unique story and history.
The hallmark of the newly remodeled space is the River-Recovered® and reclaimed Legacy Vertical Heartpine provided by Goodwin Company, which surrounds a rectangle of brilliantly positioned reclaimed pine from the original building and an inlay of a fan medallion in the center. Boston native Rudy Dittmar performed the installation.
“We could not have created this incredible space without the help of Goodwin Company,” explains Miles. “They provided the antique heartpine flooring we needed to complement the original flooring. We were able to save some of the original flooring and with their help, were able to create an amazing design that worked both old and new into a work of beauty.”

(GAINESVILLE, FL) — One of the City of Gainesville’s oldest, most cherished buildings – the historic Gainesville Depot – will receive an “Outstanding” recognition in the Restoration/Rehabilitation category at the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation, Inc. (FTHP) annual awards ceremony. The event, scheduled for May 17th from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm, will be held at the Lewis Auditorium at Flagler College.
Cypress has earned the distinction of being known as, “The Wood Eternal.” The Southern Cypress Manufacturers Association’s 1938 handbook titled, Tide Water Red Cypress, eloquently describes its durability:
For over a thousand years, the original massive Cypress doors of Saint Peter’s Church in Rome swung on their hinges. They were still in a perfect state of preservation when replaced with ornamental bronze.”
In fact, recent Cypress log excavations discovered sound wood buried over 100,000 years ago along the U.S. Atlantic Coast. The handbook, which makes for very interesting reading and I highly recommend, also references the termite resistance of the wood:
Cypressene—the essential oil of Cypress—makes Cypress highly repellent to termites. Cypress timbers in 300-year-old Spanish buildings in Florida have resisted termites, while connecting timbers of other woods were destroyed.”
Goodwin uses Cypress and pine for both interior and exterior applications. The Villages, a retirement community in Florida, features Goodwin’s Cypress and pine exteriors on one of their recent projects, Brownwood. The logs on the cabin, the posts in front of the plants and the bandstand ceiling are all heartpine. The bandstand benches, the cabin doors, and other siding are heart Cypress.
